What is a Regulatory Ombudsman?

The Riegle Community Development and Regulatory Act of 1994 required the four federal financial regulatory agencies to each establish an Office of the Ombudsman to serve as a bridge between financial institutions and their regulators. The Ombudsman provides assistance to supervised and insured financial institutions and to the general public The ACT provides that the Ombudsman:

  1. acts as a liaison between the agency and any affected person or financial institution with respect to any problem such party may have in dealing with the agency resulting from regulatory activities of the agency; and

  2. ensures that safeguards exist to encourage complainants to come forward and to preserve confidentiality
